Frequently Asked Questions about our Housing Rehabilitation Program
Do I qualify?
You must own your home (mobile homes are eligible), live in a town with a program currently open, and meet the low or very-low income requirements for your area.
What towns currently have a program open?
Services are currently available in the town of Caroline. We are in the process of applying for grants with Newfield, Enfield, and Ulysses. If you live in any of these towns and would like a pre-application, please contact us.
How much work can be done?
That depends, partly, on how much funding is available. How much work you need done, and the cost of work are also factors. In general, repairs that total between $5,000 and $24,000 are considered.
How are the repairs made?
The repairs are completed by private contractors that you select through a bid process. Better Housing helps with the bidding process. The program is require to fund the amount of the lowest bid, but homeowners can choose a higher bidding contractor, if they pay for the difference.
Is this a free service?
The repairs are paid for through a diminishing lien agreement. A portion of the lien is forgiven each year you stay in your home following the repairs, and is eventually completely forgiven as long as you do not sell your home during the lien period which is currently 5 years.
How do I get help?
Some of the towns have immediate openings for service; others have waiting lists. The first step is to find out if you qualify, and to complete an application.
